BAWNMORE ESTATE

Project by Sean O'Connell
1st Year History Project, Athenry Presentation, April 2000

The following project is about the Bawnmore Estate, which is located about ten miles north of Galway City, approximately three miles from Claregalway. In the first section I look at Cregg Castle, which was the home of the Kirwan family prior to moving to Bawnmore. I then take a look at Bawnmore House itself, its owner Richard Kirwan and what happened there in the Land League.

There are then sections on Bawnmore Gatehouse, the old Bawnmore School and the Bawnmore teacher's house. There is then a page about the most famous of the Kirwan family, Richard Kirwan, who was a scientist and was famous throughout Europe. I finish up something on the 'original Cregg Gate House?' and Cregg mill.

Most of the information in this booklet comes from local history books, local newspapers and people in the neighbourhood. I scanned most of the pictures from photo Albums at home and got some of them from the Internet.
