SELECTION FROM SEPT/OCT 2004

PICTURES

Our first picture in Sept shows Regie in full flight during hurling training in Cregg. Was he going that fast or was it simply geting too dark for the camera. This is followed by an interesting picture from the U16 game against Dunmore where we progressed to the championship semifinals against Salthill. The picture was chosen for inclusion because it was interesting rather than an indication of the tone of the game. The game was a very fair competition played equally by both sides with Annaghdown under pressure until the very last few minutes.

The Annaghdown Hurlers retain the Killeavey hurling tournament Shield for 2004 and for those that don't know, Killeavey is Steven McDonnell's home Club in Armagh. A mixture of intermediate and junior hurlers took part in the tournament which is held annually in memory of “Paddy McDonnell. Led by young captain, Fergal Doherty, we emerged victorious, defeating host club Killeavy in the final. There are stories of 22 in a van, those that didn't score on the pitch, no breakfast in the hostel and a very critical Ozzie signing.

Next we have a snap from when the Annaghdown U8 played Mountbellew in Moylough under the management of Regis Golding followed by Aidan Burke fisting the ball into the net during the Annaghdown/Renmore U16 Championship semi final on Sat 25th Sept in Corofin. Renmore just held their lead to beat Annaghdown by 1 point. They meet again in the League Final.

Another Lotto Winner---Mrs Kathleen Burke from Bawnmore was the latest winner of the G.A.A Club Lotto and she is pictured below with her winning cheque of  2.150 with husband Jackie on the left and club secretary Seamus Finnerty.

Borrowed from Sportfile we next see the Galway minor squad celebrate with the cup after victory over Kilkenny followed by Annaghdown's Niamh Duggan in action against Maria Kavanagh, Dublin. TG4 Ladies Senior Football All-Ireland Final, Dublin v Galway, Croke Park, Dublin.

Congratulations to the Under 10 team who won the Annaghdown U10 Football Tournament, which was held in Cregg.Next we see Billy Joyce snapped attending the U10 Football Blitz. Our U13 Hurling team win the City League by beating Moycullen by 1-5 to 1-1.

We wrap up this FOTOFILE in styl showing the Galway Ladies All Ireland Senior Football Champions that got a huge welcome when they arrived at our club grounds in Cregg. There were bonefires all along the way up through Cahermorris, Glenrevagh, Tumnahulla and into Aughclogeen and finally Cregg. The team and officials were welcomed by the Annaghdown Ladies Football Team along with hundreds of local well wishers. Among the members of the panel were local girls Niamh Duggan and Fiona Wynne (pictured above) who brought the first All-Ireland Senior GAA medals into the parish. Lorraine Scully spoke on behalf of the Annaghdown Ladies Team while Seamus Finnerty, Br. Conal and local Councillor Mary Hoade also expressed their best wishes.

Our U16 Footballers then had an excellent 3-10 to 1-6 victory over Renmore in the U16 A League Final played in Tuam Stadium. A brilliant second half performance in which we outscored the hot favourites Renmore by 2-7 to 0-2 copper fastened this victory. However, it was a goal, finished with aplomb by Declan Walsh towards the end of the first half that was the turning point of this game as we went in at half time just one point in arrears. Goals from Jason Barrett and Niall Farragher were the highlight of a brilliant second half which Annaghdown totally dominated. All fifteen players covered themselves in glory but one must mention the performance of corner back, Noel Burke, who was magnificent throughout.

we close with our Annaghdown U14 hurling team that traveled to Killeagh in Co. Cork to play the local side there. Killeagh is the home club of the famous Joe Deane but unfourtantly Joe was away with the Munster team who overcame Leinster in the Inter provincials when we visited. On hand however was Corks 1999 All-Ireland winning captain Mark Landers to make presentations to our captains and give some words of encouragement.
