from both players and supporters. A special word of thanks to
Charlie Coen, President of the Galway Ladies GAA who presented
the girls with their medals on the night.

40 for U10, 50 for U18 players and 70 for over

Intermediate
Ladies
Our Intermediate team started the league in a very determined
and inspirational fashion last weekend against Caherlistrane but
unfortunately we were beaten on a score line of Annaghdown 4-5
Caherlistrane 4-11. This was an impressive performance with many
young players making their debut on the intermediate team. Caherlistrane
got off to a better start but we came back to within two points
of them in the second half. The cross bar proved a hindrance on
many occasions and this proved to be the difference in the end.
Each player gave 100% in not so favourable conditions but best
on the day were Cliona Killilea, Claire Delaney, Aoife Wynne and
Nicola Burke.

At
Caherlistrane on Thursday evening a little bit of history was
made as Annaghdown and the local team played a championship game
under lights, it was the preliminary round of the North GPC 2008
Under-21 football championship with the visitors going forward
to first round on the score of 3-10 to 2-9 after extra time. It
was a very cold evening and the good attendance saw a game that
Caherlistrane lead by 2-8 to 0-7 as we entered into the final
minutes of the match but Annaghdown shot 2-1 before Denis Ryder
blew the full time whistle and extra time was next, Caherlistrane
began the scoring with a point on six minutes but Mathias Coleman
levelled matter a minute later, and points from Niall Farragher,
Ger Rafftery, Wesley Fallon and Aidan Burke gave the visitors
a three point lead as the clock ticked in to injury time but a
goal Caherlistrane goaled to level matters at the break Annaghdown
0-5 Caherlistrane 1-2. The home team did all the scoring after
the break and lead by double scores with only four minutes to
play having scored 1-6 to Annaghdown 0-2 , Brian O'Dowd and Rafftery
scoring the winners points, and followed the 'goal rush' from
Brian O'Dowd and Aidan Burke with Mathias Coleman adding the levelling
point. In the first half of extra time Annaghdown scored twice
a goal from Niall Farragher and a point from Wesley Fallon to
give us a lead of 3-9 to 2-8 at the break, in the second period
both teams scored a point each with Fergal Doherty scoring for
the winners. Our team was Declan Walsh, Noel Burke, Shane Collier,

The
minor footballers won the Jonathan Burke Memorial Cup in Monivea
last Saturday when they defeated the home side by 4-8 to 0-7.
Despite the difference in the final score it was a well contested
game until inside the last 10 minutes when we scored two goals,
one each by Andrew Golding and Dara Melia. Our total score was
accounted for by Enda Mullarkey 0-3 Andrew Golding 1-1 Shane Concannon
2-1 Patrick Healy 0-3 Dara Melia 1-0. One particular score, a
point by Patrick Healy from a sideline ball way out on the left
wing and at a narrow angle drew applause from the supporters of
both teams. Our defence was solid all through and gave little
time or space for the Monivea forwards to pose a serious threat.
Cathal Creaven in goal dealt competently with everything that
came his way and he had a solid fullback line in front of him
in Conor Furey TJ. Forde and Paul Lynch .The halfback line of
Gearoid Reynolds Brian Creaven Eoghan Kavanagh and midfielders
Jonathan Creaven and Patrick Healy also performed impressively
and launched a good number of attacks. The half forward line of
Shane Concannon Enda Mullarkey and Dara Melia all took their scores
well. The inside line was led by Andrew Golding at full forward
who was well supported by Gavin Curry and David Keane, and later
Owen Pearse all of whom won ball under pressure at vital stages
laying off good passes which led to important scores. After the
game, team captain on the day Enda Mullarkey in his acceptance
speech thanked the Monivea Club for the invitation to take part
in the competition and were also thanked for the food and refreshments
provided for all after the game.

Ladies
Football
The AGM of Annaghdown Ladies Gaelic Football took place recently.
The chairperson began by thanking everyone involved in the club
in 2007 - their hard work and time was much appreciated! It was
a very successful year with pride of place shared by two teams.
The minors won the county championship, under the guidance of
Mickey Burke, Martina Coen and Margaret Creaven and the U10's,
under the guidance of Collette Walsh, Aoife Coen and Lisa Flaherty,
won the North Board and were narrowly defeated by Claregalway
in the county final.
Our Intermediates, mentored by Brendan Melia, Gerry Scully and
Martina Coen, got to the League Final where they were defeated
by Tuam-Cartoon. Our U16's were defeated in the League Final by
Glenamaddy. The U14's were defeated in a replay of the county
championship semi-final - well done to Tom Murphy. Our U12's progressed
well last year, thanks to the work put in by Michael Higgins,
Brian Tuohy, Tom Browne, Geraldine McCarthy, Cindy Crowe and Bridget
Flaherty.
The following people were elected as managers for the forthcoming
year: Senior, Martina Coen; Minor, Mickey Burke; U16, Mickey Burke;
U14, Marian Murray; U12, Brian Tuohy. This year we say goodbye
to Brendan Melia and Gerry Scully after many years' service and
dedication to the club - they will be sadly missed. They guided
our ladies to county championship victory in 2006 and progressed
to the Connacht Final the same year and last year they were defeated
in the League Final.
The following officers were elected for the 2008 season: Chairperson,
Collette Walsh; Secretary, Mary Killilea; Treasurer, Ita Scully;
PRO, Patricia Fahy; Register, Lorraine Scully; Child Officer,
Fiona Scully; County Board Delegate, Mary Killilea and Ita Scully.
Again we say goodbye to Caroline Scully who held the position
as registrar last year.
The turnout at this year's AGM was disappointing and it is hoped
that some parents and anyone else interested will help out in
either training or administration work during the year. The club
is planning to have their prize-giving ceremony on Thursday, March
6 in the clubhouse in Cregg.
The Annaghdown Ladies Club would like to sympathise with the Wynne
family on the bereavement of Ailish's sister, Aine Slattery.

2-11 Renyvle 2-10. Two goals by Liam O'Flynn paved the way
for our Junior 'A' League final win over Renvyle at Spiddal on
Sunday, and as a result we are now promoted to Intermediate football
for 2008. Played in ideal conditions Renvyle got the better start
and lead 1-1 before we opened our scoring with a point from Johnny
Murphy after thirteen minutes, Aidan Burke and P, J.Fahy had the
gap down to one point after twenty minutes but three more points
for the losers gave them the edge as half time was fast approaching.
Liam O'Flynn had his first goal on thirty minutes with Murphy
adding a point in injury time to leave the teams all square at
the break 1-4 each. Renvyle started the second half with two points
inside three minutes but points from Fahy, Burke and Murphy edged
us ahead by one point after seven minutes, P,J.Fahy increased
our lead two minutes later but the losers pulled one back, only
for Liam O'Flynn to put us two ahead mid way through the half.
Renvyle had the next two scores a point on seventeen minutes but
two minutes later they goaled from the penalty spot to give them
a two point lead .Ger Rafftery kept us in touch with a point a
minute later and two minutes later O'Flynn scored his second goal.
It was anybody's game now as Renvyle pointed on twenty three minutes
but Rafftery steadied the ship with our last point with five minutes
to go, in the remaining minutes both sides missed scores but the
losers added one more as we entered injury time and that was as
close as they got and when Tommy Nally blew the final whistle
we had created history as it will the first that club that we
will have teams in Senior and Intermediate competitions in the
same year. The winning team was; Padraic O'Neill, Noel Burke,
Dermot Naughton, Paul Scully, Daniel Dennigan, Cathal Gaffney,

Another
hard luck story for the for our U-21 footballers in Tuam
Stadium on Saturday as we were beaten by Killererin in the North
semi-final . Killererin played into the town goal with the aid
of the breeze in the first half and got the perfect start a serious
of one twos ended with Shane Hughes firing to the net after a
good move. Mathias Coleman replied with a good point from play
for us. Killererin then scored another point before Frankie Burke
slotted over two fine points from play. The half time score was
Annaghdown 0-03 Killererin 1-3.
It
was a very tense affair with conditions getting worse in the second
half Wesley Fallon reduced the deficit to two points with a good
effort from play and after 15 minutes. Frankie Burke added his
third from play to leave a single point between the teams but
that was as close as we got. With time running out Killererin
went two in front when Shane Hughes fired over their only score
of the second half from a free. It was desperation stuff now for
Annaghdown but Ger Rafftrey played a brilliant ball over the Killererin
defence to give Frankie Burke a chance to grab and a goal which
was on for him. Unfortunatly for us he was bundled to the ground
but a penalty kick was awarded. The game was in injury time and
Ger Rafftrey stood up to take the shot but the Killererin goalie
blocked and then dived on it as it rebound of him to win the game
for Killererin on the score line of 1-4 to 0-5.
Team
was: Declan Walsh, Noel Burke, Shane Collier, John King, Ian O'Dowd,
Fergal Doherty, Thomas Burke, Fergal Coleman, Wesley Fallon (0.1),
Joseph Farragher, Mathias Coleman (0.1), Ger Rafftrey, Niall Farragher,
Frankie Burke (0.3) and Aidan Burke. Subs used: David Rafftrey,
Brain O'Dowd, Enda Mullarkey and Ciaran Duggan

A
STRONGER and more skilful Annaghdown side completely outclassed
Caltra in their meeting in the Under 21 'A' championship
quarter-final on Saturday last with the final score reading Annaghdown
5-13 Caltra 0-11. Annaghdown showed no mercy to injury stricken
Caltra and four first half goals, two inside the first five minutes
from Frankie Burke and Niall Farragher, had them coasting early
on. The half time score stood at 4-8 to 0-5 for the victors, the
other first half goals coming from the exciting Mattis Coleman
and county senior panellist Burke. The second half was just a
stroll for the men in maroon and white and while Caltra, through
Shane Hogan, Marcus O Neill and Michael Kelly never gave up, they
were never going to bridge the gap. Annaghdown had good performances
from Noel Burke, Shane Collier who found Hogan a handful, Joe
Farragher and Frankie Burke, who notched 2-6 in total. Annaghdown:
Declan Walsh, Noel Burke, Shane Collier, John King (Balrobuck),
Ian O Dowd, Fergal O Doherty, Daniel Dennigian (0-1), Fergal Coleman,

Our
under-16 footballers had an impressive win over An Chreathru
Rua in the County ‘B’ Championship final played in Spiddal on
Saturday. Despite the clearly expressed disappointment of the
players in begin denied their opportunity to play the final in
Pearse Stadium where all under-age finals were supposed to be
played, they turned in a fine performance and were deserving winners.
An Chreathru Rua were first to score despite our early pressure
as we dominated the exchanges and they lead by two points before
Dara Melia opened our scoring, Dara pointed again and Eanna Farrell
put us a point up. Melia scored two more points from frees to
give us a two point lead at the break 0-5 to 0-3 despite playing
against the breeze. After the break the team from the west were
showing signs of a strong comeback but a goal by Conor Furey virtually
sealed the victory and with further points from Dara Melia (2)
and one from Brian Creaven we ran out winners by 1.8 to 0.3 After
the match captain Brian Creaven accepted the cup as team captain
on behalf of the panel and he also received the ‘Man of the Match
award. The panel was: Pakie Killilea, Jonathan Farragher, Paul

The

They played well in the first half, keeping pace with Glenamaddy.
Chloe Hughes made some spectacular saves and brilliant defensive
work from Lillian Donoghue managed to keep Annaghdown in the race!
However the second half saw Glenamaddy take control of the match
and claim a deserved victory. Mariah Butler (Captain) led by example
at midfield, as did Vanessa Creaven. Well done to their management
team of Mickey Burke, Martina Coen and Margaret Creaven on bringing
the team this far. Team: Chloe Hughes, Alison Burke, Lillian Donoghue,

At
Cregg on Sunday we lost our last home game of the Senior Football
League to Corofin by two points 1-6 to 1-8. This sees us on
six points from eight league games having amazed two wins and
two draws. We now need to win our final game which is away to
An Cheathru Rua in order to have a chance of surviving in Division
1A of the Senior Football League. In the Corofin game on Sunday
we were slow to open our account with PJ Fahy potting our first
point after seventeen first half minutes at which stage the winners
lead by a single score but we continued the good work when Damien
Burke made it all square a minute later. Corofin had the next
four points before Anthony Pender goaled a minute before the break
to leave us trailing by a point at the break 1-2 to 0-6.
The
winners opened the second half scoring a goal after ten minutes
but Mathias Coleman reduced the lead three minutes later with
a point leaving us three behind at the mid way stage of the second
period. Damien Burke pointed after twenty minutes with Frankie
Burke having our last two points of the game to leave us trailing
by two points at the finish. It was a game that saw us very wayward
in our shooting in front of goal having shot five wides in the
first ten minutes of the game and although we finished strong
towards the end of the game again our poor finishing left a lot
to be desired
The
team was: Padraic Mannion, Benny Newell, Adrian Fitzpatrick, Martin

Our
Minors played Claregalway in the County Minor Championship Final
last Monday in Tuam Stadium. Both teams seemed to be fired up
for what was to be a classic encounter of neighbouring parishes!
The first half was evenly contested, with a goal from Claregalway
giving them a two point lead going into half time - Annaghdown
0-4 to Claregalway 1-3. Annaghdown got off to a blistering start
in the second half when Nicola Burke scored a goal, and within
a minute Rachel Murphy had scored goal number two. Annaghdown
now exerted huge pressure on Claregalway but this was to be short
lived asClaregalway came back to equalise but thanks to our brilliant
defence and some spectacular saves by Mary Kate Killilea, we managed
to keep them at bay. In the dying minutes Annaghdown retained
possession of our kick out - it was speedily passed to Mariah
Butler who put it over the bar to give us the winning point! Final
score line Annaghdown 2-7 to Claregalway 1-9. This
was a spirited team effort that won this County Minor Final, with
outstanding displays from Mary Kate Killilea, Alison Burke, Cliona
Killilea, Aine Curry, Nicola Burke and our captain, Martha Goaley
showed great leadership.

Connaughton pointed three minutes later while Kieran O'Connor
shot our last scores of the half with two frees to leave us trailing
by five points at the break. O'Connor had had our first three
points after the break with Carl Leonard adding one on fourteen
minutes to leave us trailing mid way through the half by 1-8 to
2-11 but from then on it was Kiltormer who added five points to
our two. We had excellent performances from PJ Fahy in goal, Eoghan
Murtagh and Damien Burke while Aidan Connaughton was the best
of a subdued attack. Our team was PJ Fahy, Eoin Murtagh, Kenneth
Leonard, Marc Connaughton, Richard Burke, Carl Leonard (0-1),
John King (Grange), Ronan Newell (0-1), Christy Burke, Robert
Mulryan, Patrick Murphy, Kieran O'Connor (0-6, 0-5 frees), Damien

The
Intermediate League Final was held in Tuam Stadium last Saturday
evening where Annaghdown met Tuam/Cortoon. Annaghdown had a very
good first half but Tuam/Cortoon fought back to leave just one
point between the teams at half time. The second half saw Tuam/Cortoon
take the lead but Annaghdown with a never say die attitude, fought
back gallantly when Rachel King scored a fantastic goal. Alas
Lady Luck was not shining on us and Tuam/Cortoon lifted the Cup
with a score line of Annaghdown 2-12 Tuam/Cortoon 4-10. Well done

A
super second half effort saw Annaghdown snatch a one point victory
over a very good Portumna side in the Junior Hurling Championship
semi-final replay played at Clarinbridge on Saturday last. Portumna
lead by six points at half time 0-10 to 0-4 but we produced a
great second half comeback to gain a point victory in the end
by 1-10 to 0-12 to put us into our third Junior C Championship
hurling final in ten years and fourth even. Previously we played
in the 1986 final which we lost to Tuam while we had a victory
in the 1999 final beating Gort. We also reached the 2002 final
with our second string as is the case this year. Back to Saturday's
action however and this was certainly the proverbial game of two
half's for us, we were out of it in the first half and we even
had a Ciaran O Connor penalty saved when Damien Burke was fouled
in the square and not alone did we trail our opponents at the
break but we looked out of contention in almost all sectors of
the field. In the second half we were all fired up but it took
an Aidan Connaughton goal after fifty minutes to bring us right
back into contention and having drawn level at the end of normal
time O'Connor pointed a 65 to book us a place in the Final against
Kiltormer on Saturday next. Ciaran O'Connor had an outstanding
game scoring ten points, seven from frees and two sixty fives
while the Leonards Carl and Kenny and Eoin Murtagh were also to
the fore. We have now beaten Carnmore, Ballindereen, Ballygar,
Cappataggle, Athenry and Portumna on our way to the final which
is on next Saturday at 2.30pm in Craughwell. The team was: P J
Fahy, Marc Connaughton, Kenny Leonard, Eoin Murtagh, Reggie Burke,
Carl Leonard, John King, Ronnie Newell (0-1), Christy Burke, Ciaran
O'Connor (0-9), Pa Murphy, Rob Mulryan, Damien Burke, Aidan Connaughton
(1-0) and Thomas Burke. Subs Paul Walsh, Enda Mullarkey and Aidan
Joyce.
We
had a one point win in the Minor C hurling quarter final
beating Ahrascragh /Fohenagh by 4-10 to 5-6 in the replay in Abbeyknockmoy
on Sunday last. Team was: Andrew Golding, Pa Burke, Ronan Melia,
Jonathon Comer, Fergus Fahy, Paul Lynch, Brian Creaven (0-1),
Ciaran Duggan, Peter Hession (0-5), Gary Dooley, Thomas Murphy
(1-1), Declan Walsh (0-1) and Enda Mullarkey (3-2).
With
this again being a hurling weekend we are out in both the Junior
C Hurling final where we face Kiltormer on next Saturday at
2.30pm in Craughwell. On Sunday we play Ballinasloe in the Minor
C Hurling semi-final at 11.30pm in Menlough.

added three more points with Anthony Pender scoring our other
point. We now are on four points with games to come against Cortoon
Shamrocks and Corofin at home while we have to travel to An Chreathru
Rua to play the Connemara side. The team was Padraic O’Neill,

In
Junior C Hurling championship semi-final a late Portumna
point levelled the game at 2-11 each. We played with the elements
in the first half and got a good start when Tomas Burke scored
an early goal. Portumna a physical experienced side drew level
when they scored a penalty. Annaghdown lead at the break 1-7 to
1-5. Second half was end to end stuff and a Pa Murphy goal had
Annaghdown in control until the last ten minutes when Portumna
hit the net to leave only a point in it. It ended level when Portumna
were awarded a dubious late free which they converted. Team was:
Padjoe Fahy, Marc Connaughton, Kenny Leonard, Eoin Murtagh, Reggie
Burke, Carl Leonard (0-1), John King (0-1), Viv Silke (0-1), Ronnie
Newell, Rob Mulryan, Pa Murphy (1-1), Christy Burke, Aidan Connaughton

Ladies
Football.
It
was a disappointing week in the office for Annaghdown ladies football
last week. Firstly our U16's suffered defeat against a strong
Glenamaddy side in the Championship semi-final on Monday night,
then on Tuesday evening the U 12's travelled to Moycullen and
they also were defeated.
In
the U12 game Moycullen had started well, but we fought back and
were only two
points down at half time. However Moycullen came out all guns
blazing in the second half and we never recovered. Well done to
the U12's in progressing to that stage!
The
U 14's travelled to Caherlistrane on Thursday evening for the
replay of the quarter final of the Championship. We started well
and continued to lead for most of the first half but Caherlistrane
drew level just before half time. They started the econd half
well and it was nip and tuck between both sides up to the final
whistle but alas Caherlistrane progressed to the semi-finals!
The effort, commitment and spirit of the players and Tom, their
manager was very evident on the night - a fine display of football
girls!
Our Minors began their Championship hopes on Tuesday evening where
they met Glinsk in Cregg - full results next week.
Our
Intermediates are into the League Final where they will meet Tuam/Cartoon
- date and venue as yet to be confirmed!
The
Maureen Faherty Memorial Cup will be played this Sunday 30th Sept
at 12.15p.m. In Cregg. All u10's and U12's are asked to be in
attendance. After the match they are being brought on their annual
outing - please bring 2 for the bus

Sunday evening in Tuam Stadium our Senior Football championship
season came to an end when we lost to Milltown by 2-10 to 1-8,
we trailed at the break by one point 5 to 4. We scored first with
a point from Frankie Burke after one minute but Milltown had next
two scores before Frankie had his second point on eight minutes.
Damien Burke put us in front six minutes later with a point but
the winners made it all square a minute later with a point. Padraic
Mannion had our last score of a half on twenty minutes to give
us a point lead and as it turned out it was the last time we lead
in the game as Milltown had the last two points of the half. Milltown
found the net after two minutes of the second and added a point
to lead by 1-6 to 0-4 after ten minutes but a Wesley Fallon goal
made it a two point game but that was as good as it got as the
winners scored their second goal a minute later to finish the
game as a contest, our last three points came from Frankie and
Damien with the latter scoring two. Our team was: Padraic Mannion,
