Annaghdown
got the better of reigning champions Killanin at Tuam to book their
place in the Galway SFC final.
Annaghdown’s present stars rolled back the clock to the eighties
when they were the undisputed kingpins of Galway football and they
were thoroughly deserving of the win. In fact, they wouldn’t have
been flattered by a wider winning margin.
Centre-back Ronan Leonard, Damien Burke, Morgan and Matt Duggan
and substitute Michael Newell were particularly prominent for the
winners.
Annaghdown
scorers - D Burke 0-2, S Kavanagh 0-2, M Newell 0-2, PJ Fahy

Galway SFC final
Annaghdown...........................1-7
Killererin................................0-8
Killererin
were left to rue a missed Tommie Joyce second half penalty as Annaghadown
celebrated a memorable win over their more fancied opposition.
Despite
Joyce’s miss early in the second half, the surprise packets of this
year’s Galway SFC were well worth their two point win and, indeed,
should have probably had the game wrapped up much earlier.
They
got off to a great start when Damien Burke fired home from the spot
following a foul by county ‘keeper Alan Keane on Carl Leonard.
County
star Padraig Joyce kept Killererin in touch throughout and ended
up with a personal tally of 0-7 but not even he could deprive Annghadown
of their first county title in 14 years.

Galway
champs Annaghdown produced a Lazarus-like comeback to rob St Mary’s
from Sligo of victory in this Connacht Club SFC semi-final at Tuam
Stadium.
Annaghdown
trailed by five points at half-time and went six behind shortly
after the resumption but inspired by Michael Newell and Damien Burke
in attack they produced a comeback which resulted in Burke scoring
the winning point from a free in the dying seconds of the game.
It
was a bitter blow for the men from the Yeats County, particularly
full-foward Mark Brehony who was once again their star man and contributed
an individual tally of 0-7.

Charlestown
of Mayo won the Connacht Club SFC title at their first attempt when
getting the better of Annaghdown of Galway at Tuam Stadium.
In
a hugely entertaining game, the sides were level, 2-7 each, at the
50th minute stage but points by Mark Caffrey and Richard Haran edged
the Mayo champs ahead and they held on to clinch victory.
“This
really is an incredible day for Charlestown club,” said team captain
David Tiernan afterwards. “Who would have thought last spring that
we would be here today? It took an awful lot of hard work and so
many people put so much into it but it has been worth it.

great to see so many happy Charlestown people. Some of them came
from America to support us and we’re delighted we were able to give
them a great day out and hopefully there’s more to come.”

Annaghdown upset the odds in County Final
Galway
Senior County Football Final
Annaghdown 1-7
Killererin 0-8
The year 2001 will forever be etched in our memories as the year
of the underdog as yet again in a major final the favourites were
cast aside by the hunger of the team with all to play for. Tipp
overcame favourites Galway in the All-Ireland Hurling Final, Galway
did the business against raging favourites Meath in the football
decider while in County Hurling, Clarinbridge shocked everyone when
they defeated mighty Athenry. Today in Tuam Stadium Annaghdown added
their name to the list of newcomers and they restored themselves
to the top of Galway football for the first time since they dominated
the grade back in 1987.
This game no only became a battle of two teams but in the end boiled
down to a battle between two men. Killererin had the undisputed
king of Galway football Padraig Joyce scoring all but one of his
sides total while Annaghdown had their own talisman in the form
of the super Damien Burke who gave an exhibition of forward play.
With Alan Keane back in their ranks and the two Joyce's in top form
it was no wonder that the champs of 1999 were the pre-match favourites.
Two early Padraig Joyce frees got them off to a dream start, with
Damien Burke responding before the game was turned on it's head
and Annaghdown were to take a lead they would never relinquish.
A long ball from the underdogs midfield by the impressive Matt Duggan
found Michael Newell bearing down on goal and he quickly set up
PJ Fahy who was unceremonisly brought to earth by Alan Keane and
Pat McGovern had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.
Like a veteran, Burke stepped forward to shoot low to the left past
the All-Star nominee and the Annaghdown contingent in the large
crowd were in full voice. It was a dream start and settled the team
giving them the extra belief if indeed it was needed, but after
overcoming Tuam Stars, NUIG and Killanin on the way to the Final
Annaghdown they were not short on confidence.
Showing their big match experience Killererin responded with two
more Padraig Joyce frees to bring parity to the teams at 1-1 to
0-4 with eleven minutes on the clock. Fahy and Joyce swapped further
points but Annaghdown had the chances to put the game beyond reach,
but it was a measure of their dominance when they could afford to
fire 11 wides and still finish with their noses in front.
Newell had a brilliant chance of a goal in a one-on-one situation
with Alan Keane, but shot narrowly wide before Damien Burke rounded
off the half with a well-taken point to put the minimum between
the sides.
Newell stretched Annaghdowns lead before Killererin had the chance
to get back into the game after Packie Mitchell was dragged to the
ground and the game saw it's second penalty awarded. Step forward
Galway hero Tommy Joyce who struck a super shot but could only watch
in horror as it cannoned back of the crossbar and Annaghdown breathed
a sigh of relief.
After witnessing the unusual sight of Padraig Joyce plying his trade
in his own half which back-fired spectacularly he was brought forward
again to try and save the game which was slipping away from them,
after Burke added another point.
Ever dependable Joyce replied with two before Annaghdown sub John
Mannion struck a super point to bring it down to the wire. Mitchell
responded for Killererin as the went forward in droves looking to
snatch the game but the Annaghdown defence held firm. A minute into
injury time PJ Fahy struck the insurance point for the underdogs
as they recorded their fifth county title, and triggered a massive
party, which will last well into the week.
After a long hard season it was a sad end for Killererins Galway
trio, but one had to feel especially sorry for Padraig Joyce who
did everything possible to keep his team in the hunt, but their
opponents deserved their victory after a super team performance.
